Adam Gidwitz

Hey, this is our presentation on Adam Gidwitz’s visit to our school. First let’s start with talking about who this amazing author is. Adam GIdwitz is an accomplished author and writer of A Tale Dark and Grimm series, he also just released a new book called Max in the House of Spies which he gave us a quick overview of. He has received a Newbery Honor for his other book called The Inquisitor’s Tale.

At our school Adam Gidwitz also talked about how he never envisioned himself as an author although all his life he had a big imagination. With that he told us to be open minded and never think that just because you want to grow up to be one thing sometimes you may have talents that better suit something else. He told us stories about his early childhood and he talked about how his book Max in the House of Spies was based on a family friend.

And here are the photos of the presentation:

Tree Planting!

Here is my experience of a tree planting trip I did with my school called Keep Durham Beautiful. Here are a couple of pictures from the trip.

In the second photo we planted Sycamore trees, Poplars and Red Seeder. We also watched a documentary that talked about listening to the trees and how water flows through the trees. It also talked about how protecting trees is very beneficial to us humans directly and over time. Overall this field trip was very educational and gave me a great feeling that I helped something good.

Homework :) or ):

This post is all about homework!

In my opinion homework being good or bad depepends on how much is given, how much time you have to complete the homework, how difficult it is, and how much is given.

How much homework? For me the perfect balance is a quick easy-medium review with maybe one or two hard questions sprinkled in. This is good for most kids and teachers. 1 for the kids it is a good to see if they understand the topic that was learned in class and 2 for the teacher to see if the kid was paying attention in class or if they need help with a subject.

How much time to complete the homework?  How much is given? How difficult is it? 1 if the teacher gives 2 papers full of math questions and it’s not a quiz or test you missed, than in my opinion that’s just cruel. I mean especially if the problems are difficult sometimes kids get really mad and that’s just taking away their confidence.

Thanks for the time. If you disagree with me than you can comment below what you think about homework. (:

Basketball :(

Basketball

This blog is written by Jonah, Teddy and Callan. We will be talking about our basketball season. We are all on the same team with some of our other school friends and some other random people. Our coach is our friend Matthew’s dad. By the way Matthew is on our team too. So far our record is 0-11. Listen, our team’s average height is 4 foot 10, and we play against teams that are twice the height of some of our players. We have one more game coming up and hopefully we can win that, because it is our last game. Despite our frightening streak of games it has been a fun and great season with all of us improving a lot in skill, technique, and IQ of the game.

My Comic!!!!!

In my class we have been working on comics of a book called Wisdom Tales.

Taken by me

Front this collection I chose a story called Giving the Moon. I chose this story because I thought it had a great moral. The moral was to bring goodness into the world. Stealing is wrong and having compassion for everyone even those who do wrong. Here is the comic. Hope you enjoy!!!

Thanksgiving

THANKSGIVING:

This blog is written by Jonah, Callan and Teddy

The history of Thanksgiving:

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the USA. This year Thanksgiving was on Thursday November 23 Thanksgiving occurs on the third Thursday of every November. The first Thanksgiving took place in 1621 between the Plymouth colonists from England and the Wampanoag Natives. It wasn’t until 1863 when Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday in the USA. Many people still celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States of America. Something cool about Thanksgiving is it always falls on the 4th Thursday of November.

Baseball!

First off I would like to say that baseball is awesome and I love it. Baseball is a sport I have been playing since I was six. I have devoted myself to a travel ball team and I have accomplished much on that team.

Now a short rant about baseball,

To start off my team name is Riptide

from the internet

Also, my record for this previous season was 16 wins and 8 loses. My favorite baseball player is Mookie Betts which is the reason why I wear the number 50 on my baseball jersey. I also hit my first home run this this season which was a big deal for me since I have worked a lot on hitting.

My team also went to a Cal Ripken baseball facility for a tournament where we went 5 wins and 0 loses to win the tournament. This is a big accomplishment for my team as we have been working hard and practicing a lot.

And that concludes my short rant. Thank You!

History of Halloween in the United States:

Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31st. You probably already know about the costumes and trick or treating but do you know the real history behind Halloween? Halloween originally started with the Ancient Celtic celebration of Samhain when people would make fires and wear costumes to ward away phantoms on November 1st. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III made November 1st as a time to remember all the Saints Day.  Then eventually All Saints Day got added to Samhain traditions. The day before all Saints day was first known as Hallows Eve. Then eventually evolved into the Halloween we know today with all the costumes and trick or treating.
